Canada's newest Popstars Sugar Jones

TORONTO, March 25 /CNW/ - Talent and tenacity have prevailed and now Canada's Popstars have a new name and identity.

The five finalists, who were revealed in the March 25 episode, will make up the group Sugar Jones. They are:

Sahara MacDonald of Vancouver, British Columbia
Andrea Henry of Hamilton, Ontario
Mirella Dell'Aquila of St. Leonard, Quebec
Julie Crochetiere of Montreal, Quebec
Maiko Watson of Winnipeg, Manitoba

"Global is delighted by the success of Popstars. The series has performed consistently since its debut and is the highest-rated Canadian non-sports program in Canada," said Global's Loren Mawhinney, Vice President, Canadian Production. "We are proud of the show and proud of these remarkable young women who, through their professionalism and dedication, have proven themselves before a national audience."

"Popstars represented the most unique, high-profile call for talent in the history of the music and television business," said Michael Geddes, President, Lone Eagle Entertainment Ltd. and executive producer of Popstars. "We have found five talented and unique individuals who will be 'Canada's Own', and conquer internationally," he added.

"When we started this project last year, we thought we would end up with a traditional pop band, but once we got through the boot camp, we realized we had five women who had a lot more depth," said Allan Reid, Senior Vice President, A&R, Universal Music Canada. "As we spent more time with the individuals who are now Sugar Jones, the music took on a more soulful R&B/pop sound. We've listened to over a thousand songs, we have picked 10 songs for the debut CD, and Sugar Jones has also been writing which is a bonus we didn't expect when we started. The girls really have had a lot to do with the musical direction."

Tune in to Popstars on Global Television Sunday, April 1 for the worldwide premiere of Sugar Jones' debut single, Days Like That. Days Like That will be serviced to radio across Canada on Wednesday, April 3. Watch for the premiere of the Sugar Jones' video for Days Like That later in April. The song was produced by award-winning Canadian producer Justin Gray (Snow, McMaster & James, Wide Mouth Mason). Days Like That will be available in stores everywhere on Tuesday, May 1. Sugar Jones' debut album will be released this summer with a tour to follow.

On Wednesday, March 28, will hold a live online chat with the five members of Sugar Jones. The one-hour chat will take place at 7pm ET.

Popstars chronicles the selection, creation and development of Canada's first all-girl supergroup. The primetime docu-soap, produced by Lone Eagle Entertainment Ltd. in association with Global Television, follows all the behind-the-scenes drama and excitement of the selection process, which culminates in a recording contract with Universal Music Canada.

The series is produced by award-winning producer Maria Pimentel and directed by veteran documentary director Joseph Blasioli.

Popstars airs Sundays in Canada on the Global Television Network.

Ontario/Quebec/British Columbia - 7pm
Manitoba/Saskatchewan - 6pm
Atlantic/Alberta - 8 pm
